SEO FOR MOVING COMPANIES

Movers do not have a website problem. They have a lead problem.

You are paying for leads that three of your competitors bought on the same afternoon. SEO for moving companies is the only channel where the call belongs to you. Ten questions, under a minute, and I send back a written report inside one business day.

What Axis builds

Four systems behind SEO for moving companies that actually works.

Local SEO for moving companies

Local Visibility

The Google Business Profile filled out completely, categories correct, and the NAP matching across every directory that already lists you. This is where the map pack is won, and it is the fastest moving part of SEO for moving companies.

City page SEO for moving companies

City And Route Pages

One page for every town you service and every long distance route you run regularly, each written rather than spun from a template. A Bergen County residential mover and a New Jersey to Florida carrier compete for completely different searches, and a template cannot tell them apart. This is the part of SEO for moving companies that scales past a single service area.

Moving company website and SEO

Proof That Earns The Call

Licenses, USDOT, real reviews and photos of your own crews, placed where a customer decides whether to call. A customer choosing a mover is deciding who to let into their home, so price is the last question, not the first. It is the least technical part of SEO for moving companies and often the most decisive.

The problem

The site loads fine. The phone still does not ring.

Most moving company sites are not badly built. They are badly found. The site loads, the photos look fine, and the phone still does not ring, because nothing on it is positioned to show up when somebody in your service area types a query with intent behind it.

The pattern repeats. Every route you run lives on one page, so a search for a specific origin city never finds you. The Google Business Profile has not been touched since the office moved. There is no USDOT number and no license detail, nothing a nervous customer can verify in ten seconds. The quote form asks for eleven fields before it asks what is being moved. Reviews sit on Google and never appear anywhere on the site.

Most of those sites were assembled from a template by somebody who has never dispatched a crew. That is fixable, and Axis takes over existing sites and fixes them. But the sites that win are hand-coded, and there is a ceiling on what any amount of optimization does for a page builder site carrying code it does not use. I ran moving companies for two decades before I built websites for them. Operations manager, general manager, owner. AMSA Certified Moving Consultant. That means I know what a slow January costs, what a broker lead really converts at, and why your dispatcher will never update a site that takes six clicks to edit.

No agency that has never dispatched a crew understands any of it, which is why SEO for moving companies written by generalists reads like it was written about a different industry. You can verify any carrier's authority yourself at the FMCSA SAFER system, and so can your customer. Most moving company sites never mention it. More about Ricardo.

The math

Broker leads against organic calls

Broker leads

  • Sold to as many as five movers at once
  • Cost per lead rises every year
  • Stops the day you stop paying
  • Customer is price shopping before you answer
  • You compete on rate, not on service

Organic calls

  • Yours alone, nobody else bought it
  • Cost drops as the pages mature
  • Keeps producing after the work is paid for
  • Customer found you and chose to call
  • You compete on trust and proof

Already paying for SEO

The two Search Console screens that answer most of it

This part is written for the mover six months in, holding a report full of green arrows, watching a phone that does not ring. Every check below you can run yourself, today, without hiring anybody.

Before anyone is hired or fired, two screens in a tool you already have will tell you more than any SEO for movers report you have been sent. The first is the query view. Filter to the last three months and check whether your impressions are concentrated on your own business name. Branded traffic climbing while non-branded stays flat means people who already knew you are finding you, which is not what SEO for movers is being paid to do. Non-branded growth is the only line that proves the work.

The second is the Page Indexing report, and it is the one that most often explains a flat year. Google publishes the exact status strings, and two of them mean your page will never be served:

  • Crawled, currently not indexed, meaning Google looked at the page and decided not to include it
  • Duplicate without user-selected canonical, meaning Google picked a different page of yours instead
  • Discovered, currently not indexed, meaning Google knows the page exists and has not bothered to crawl it
  • A count of indexed pages that is far below the count you were invoiced for

Run the count on your service pages as well as your city pages, because the failure is rarely distributed evenly. It takes about four minutes and nobody selling SEO for movers will run it for you unprompted, because the number is frequently embarrassing. Indexation is the first thing an honest SEO for movers engagement reports on, not the last.

Telling patience apart from stalling

Every provider says SEO takes three to six months, and it is true, which is exactly what makes it useful cover. The sentence is doing two jobs: describing how long compounding takes, and buying time for an engagement where nothing has happened. Told apart they look nothing alike. Technical fixes and profile corrections move inside weeks. Authority and content depth are the parts that genuinely need months.

Google publishes the questions it thinks you should ask a prospective SEO, and they are sharper than anything in a sales deck:

  • What results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe
  • How do you measure your success
  • Will you share every change you make to my site, with the reasoning behind it
  • What is your experience in my industry, and can you show the work

That third one is the whole test. A provider doing real work has a change log and hands it over without friction. A provider who has done nothing sends a rankings report instead, because a rankings report generates in a minute and a change log cannot be produced retroactively. Timing is the hidden cost in SEO for movers, not the retainer: a mover who spends six months finding out nothing happened has lost the window in which next summer pages needed building.

Ranking without ringing, and the address problem

You rank, the phone rings, and the job still does not book. That is not a search problem and no amount of SEO for movers work will fix it. It is a form routing somewhere nobody checks, a quote path asking for a number before it gives a price, a page taking four seconds on a weak signal, or nobody answering at four on a Friday in June.

The second trap is structural and almost nobody raises it. Almost every mover is a service area business hiding its address, and research across thousands of businesses found that hiding the address correlated negatively with ranking for near me queries, while showing a real staffed address correlated positively:

  • Proximity to the searcher is the second strongest local factor and cannot be optimised away
  • A physical address in the city of search ranks among the top handful of factors
  • Business hours accuracy sits inside the top five, and a profile saying closed on Saturday in June is invisible on the busiest booking day
  • Reviews arriving monthly outweigh reviews accumulated years ago

That is a real headwind you may be paying an agency to fight without either of you naming it. If you have a genuine location you can staff, showing it usually helps. Inventing one is a suspension risk, not a strategy.

What the research says

Four findings that change what you should check first.

None of these are Axis figures. Each is published research with its method attached, because SEO for movers is an industry where confident claims outnumber measured ones.

Whitespark, 47 experts

#1 and #2

Primary Google Business Profile category and proximity to the searcher are the top two Local Pack factors in the 2026 ranking factors survey, scored above links. If your provider is selling backlinks as the fix for map pack visibility, the research does not support it, and SEO for movers built on link buying tends to underperform the mover who simply fixed his categories.

Sterling Sky, 8,186 businesses

Negative

The correlation between hiding your address as a service area business and ranking for near me queries, across 200 cities in five home service verticals. Movers are almost universally service area businesses. The study did not include movers, so this transfers by mechanism rather than by direct measurement, which is the honest way to use it rather than presenting it as mover-specific proof.

Google Search Console

Averaged

Position in your report is the topmost position a link to your page held, averaged across all queries. That single definition explains most reports that look like progress. The average can rise while every phrase that produces a booked move stays exactly where it was. Any SEO for movers report leading with average position is leading with the most easily misread number Google publishes.

Google Search Central

6 causes

Google publishes six official causes of a search traffic drop, and seasonality is one of them. Before anyone is blamed for a January decline, the sixteen month view in Search Console will tell you whether last January looked the same.

Common questions

What movers ask before they start.

How long before SEO for moving companies produces calls

Local visibility moves first, usually inside 60 to 90 days once the Google Business Profile and citations are corrected. City and route pages take longer because Google has to crawl, index and then rank them. On one managed moving engagement, average position moved from 44.7 to 32.0 and ranking keywords doubled from 20 to 40 across six months.

Do I need a new website or can the current one be fixed

Both are real options. Axis takes over existing sites and fixes the indexing, the load time and the local setup, and that is often the right first move. But a template site carries code it never uses, and that sets a ceiling on how fast it will ever be. A hand-coded build removes the ceiling. SEO for moving companies works on either, but a slow foundation caps what it returns. The free audit tells you which side of that line your site is on.

How is this different from buying leads

A broker lead is sold to as many as five movers at once, so you are price shopping against your competitors before you answer the phone. Cost per lead rises every year and the flow stops the day you stop paying. An organic call is yours alone, it came from a customer who chose you, and the pages keep producing after the work is paid for.

How many city pages do I actually need

One for every town you genuinely service, not every town in the state. Pages that say nothing get crawled once and dropped, so the count matters less than what is on them. The audit narrows the list to the cities with real buyer demand before any page gets built, which is usually fewer than owners expect.

What happens to my rankings if I stop the retainer

The pages stay yours and keep ranking, because they are on your domain and your hosting, in your name from day one. What stops is the ongoing work: fresh content, citation monitoring, and fixes when search changes. Rankings decay slowly rather than disappearing. Retainers run month to month with no cancellation fee.

Why do I rank in my own town and nowhere else

Proximity is the second strongest factor in local results, and it is the one you cannot optimise away. Movers feel it worse than most trades because the service travels while the ranking does not. Genuine coverage of a neighbouring town needs its own page with real substance, not your homepage hoping to stretch fifteen miles.

My traffic dropped in January, was that the agency

Probably not, and there is a ninety second way to know. Switch the Search Console date filter to sixteen months and compare this January against last January rather than against December. Google names seasonality as one of six official causes of a traffic drop. Moving demand genuinely falls, so the year over year view is the only honest comparison, and any SEO for movers report without it cannot answer the question.

Do you work with movers outside New Jersey

Yes. SEO for moving companies is remote work, and the method does not change by state. What changes is the competitive picture, which the free audit measures before anything is quoted. Bilingual English and Portuguese, which matters for carriers serving Brazilian communities in the Northeast and in Florida.
